Helicopter crash off Canada coast
|
A helicopter has ditched in Atlantic waters off Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland, reports say.
It was carrying 18 people at the time of the incident, coastguard and rescue sources said.
A search and rescue operation is under way, with the local coastguard reporting that two people had been spotted in the water.
The helicopter was said to have been ferrying workers to the nearby Hibernia offshore oil platform.
A Hercules aircraft and four Cormorant rescue helicopters are on their way to the site and a coast guard ship and a supply ship are about an hour away, reported news agency AP.
It was quoting Gerry Grychowski of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, who said winds were fairly strong in the area, with 1.8m-2.7m (6-9ft) waves.
He said a life raft had been seen in the water, but that there was no sign of the helicopter.
